At the end of this production, I was nominated by the Betty Lynn Buckley Awards for Excellence in Scenic Design.
This production provided it's unique set of challenges, mostly because of its sheer size.
Having to figure out ways to make the scenery capable of seamless transitions and constructed in a timely manner was the biggest challenge.
Overall, this show was a great learning experience in terms of management, carpentry, and time budgeting.
Because of the scale of this show and the numerous different locations, the design that was developed was to create 2 16' tall building that were faced on all four sides to represent the different locations that were needed in the show.
We create two sides for skyscrapers, two sides for Havana, one for the sewer, two for the Hot Box, and one for the Mission. When I was designing these units, weight and money was a concern, so I opted to use insulation foam sheets instead of wood facing.
