DANIELLE MOHLMAN'S FRANKENSTEIN
September - October 2021
Byron Nelson High School Theater
Directed by: James Hammer
Scene Designer - Carpenter

This version of Frankenstein is unique in the fact that it's told from Mary Shelley's point of view. It's more about what she was going through when she was writing the tale we all know.
That created a unique space that enabled me as both a designer and fabricator to play.
The director had decided that he wanted the show to come to life gradually as the story unfolded.
In order to achieve the directors vision,, I came up with the idea to create a sort of framework of a set, one that could be puzzle-pieced together.
The series of boxes that we created were picked mostly because they could be built quickly and still create that dynamic space that the director desired. We also built a frame for a projector screen that looked like a book to make it appear that the characters sprung out of a book. We also used steel platforms to create some elevation to the otherwise flat set of the show.
Because of the intimacy of the plot, we had the audience seated on the stage which meant that every little detail was needed to complete the illusion.
The biggest challenge in this show was overall management, I had to learn how to manage both the people and the time spent on each little piece of the puzzle to make sure each piece made it to the stage. I have to give massive credit to the fantastic crew who supported me and were willing to work with me throughout the production.
